Professor Kristina Akesson elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University
G-MUSC would like to congratulate Professor Kristina Akesson on being elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University for the term of office 2021 – 2023 having previously served as deputy dean. Kristina is a founding member of the Global Alliance for Musculoskeletal Health, originally being launched in Lund as the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010, and she has served throughout on the executive until last year.
She is professor of Orthopedics at the Department of Orthopedics at Skane University Hospital Malmö, and at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Sweden. At present she is leading the Clinical and Molecular Osteoporosis Research Group; her research projects are focused on risk and protective factors in young adult and old women, delineating their importance for fracture, osteoporosis and aging. This includes factors to maximize bone mass but also genetic contribution and factors of importance with advancing age (kidney function, low grade inflammation; frailty and neuromuscular function). She is also engaged in translational bone research to understand underlying mechanisms of osteoporosis. She is a member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation committee of scientific advisors, co-chairing the IOF working-group on fractures which initiated Capture the Fracture initiative. She was co-chair of the WHO Collaborating Center for Evidence-based Health Care in Musculoskeletal Disorders (Lund) and has served as advisor to the Swedish Board on Health and Welfare and other national agencies. Teaching at the school of Medicine has been a priority as has it been as secretary of specialist education Swedish Orthopedic Society 2006-2009 and internationally within BJD. She is currently the president of the Swedish Osteoporosis Society. She is deputy member of the editorial board of “Osteoporosis International” and previously associate editor of “BMC Geriatrics” and on the board of “Acta Orthopedica”.
