Measurement: Need and performance

The first step in improving prevention and care for people with MSK conditions is measuring the need and evaluating the system that is currently in place. G-MUSC is supporting work to facilitate surveillance as well as to identify how to best measure system performance at a country level.

Surveillance

Following the development of the Surveillance a survey module (link this to the other page)  for MSK conditions it was piloted in the Solomon Islands and the results were made available  here. Work is now being undertaken to:

  • help countries to identify how to use the tool including embedding it in their general health surveillance systems
  • further refine the tool for use in other countries
  • modify the tool to include children and youth

Performance

Program and services for individuals with MSK conditions are available through the public health systems as well as through the hospitals and rehabilitation sectors. As such there are many opportunities to capture data and many examples of data that is used on a regular basis to improve care. This strategy is collecting the indicators that are currently used to effectively monitor performance of the different components of the public health and health care systems.
